(WFLX) - Michael Sam, an all-American defensive lineman and the SEC Defensive Player of the Year has announced he's gay. He's the first college football player to publicly declare his homosexuality.

Sam, who plays for the Missouri Tigers, has come out publicly, telling ESPN he wanted to "own his truth" and make sure he could tell his story the way he wanted to tell it.

He said his teammates and coaches have known since August. Sam is eligible for the NFL draft in May.

If he were drafted, he could become the first openly gay player in the history of the NFL. The NFL released a statement Sunday in support of Sam saying, "They admire his honesty and courage and look forward to welcoming and supporting him in 2014."
