KEY WEST, FL (WFLX) - It was a dangerous journey to freedon for one Cuban who windsurfed across the Florida Straits.
Henry Vergara made the journey across the Florida Straits after leaving Cuba Tuesday morning. Vergara said he left with nothing but a water bottle and a picture of his girlfriend.
The 24-year-old spent a year preparing for the trip. He arrived in Key West just over nine hours after he left Jibacoa.
Despite the exhaustion and the blistered hands, Vergara said, he felt a great sense of relief. "In the middle of the Florida Straits, there are strong currents, strong wings, but I achieved it," he said. "I felt like I was in heaven. I felt good that I accomplished what I wanted. It's a dream, a dream come true."
Vergara aspires to become a professional windsurfer. He said he plans to go to school and begin a new life in the U.S.
