NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -

South Carolina Highway Patrol says two people were taken to a hospital Wednesday night after a North Charleston police cruiser flipped while on its way to the scene of an accident.

Troopers say police were responding to an accident on Palmetto Commerce Parkway when the driver of a cruiser lost control and hit a raised curb on the median, flipping the vehicle.

A North Charleston police officer and 70-year-old Bill Youngblood, a volunteer chaplain for Coastal Crisis Chaplaincy were inside the cruiser.

The men were transported to MUSC, according to Highway Patrol. Both people were wearing the seatbelts.

Youngblood said, "Even before we did the first flip, I just said it's in your hands Lord and I just turned it over to him."

According to Youngblood, the car flipped four times.

"Every time we rolled, I felt myself slamming up against the door. Things like this just make me stronger. God's in control," said Youngblood.

Officials with the North Charleston Police Department released information on the incident Thursday afternoon which stated the incident happened at 10:30 p.m. on Wednesday, when a police officer and a chaplain were responding to a call for service reportedly involving weapons in the Wescott subdivision.

The NCPD says the officer lost control of his vehicle which then struck the median and rolled.

According to the NCPD, the highway patrol is investigating the collision and the police department is conducting an internal review of the incident.

Authorities with the North Charleston Police Department say they would like to thank the first responder community, which responded to the accident last night to provide aid to the department's officer and chaplain.

"We are thankful that the officer and chaplain did not sustain serious injuries as a result of the collision," a release by the police department stated.
