WEST PALM BEACH, FL (WFLX) - Fox 29's Brian Entin has confirmed West Palm Beach Police Chief Vincent Demasi is retiring. He will step down in May.

After only a year as chief last September, Demasi said, he applied to be the head of the police department in Cincinnati. He then had a change of heart and remained the city's police chief.

Hired in June 2012, Demasi took over the police department in August 2012.

Last month, Demasi said a troubled economy led the department to cut back on hiring to avoid layoffs in previous years.

Demasi said not enough officers, old police cruisers, and a building in desperate need of renovations are critical issues plaguing the department.

Demasi said it is not easy to recruit officers because so many departments are hiring. And he said  the aging fleet of cars and infrastructure issues don't help the problem.

However, he didn't cite budget issues as reasons for retiring. "After 40 years in the business you get a little tired, and these guys have worked me to death. There is so much talent here, and there is so much enthusiasm that I am starting to feel like I am slowing them down," the chief said.

Chief Demasi said that his dad died recently and that served as a wake-up call that he needs to spend more time with his family.

TIMELINE OF EVENTS DURING VINCENT DEMASI'S TENURE AS WEST PALM POLICE CHIEF

August 13, 2012

Vince Demasi, a retiring assistant police chief from Cincinnati, accepts an offer to become West Palm Beach's police chief.

July 2, 2013

On the job for less than a year as chief, it's revealed that Demasi has applied for the chief's job at his former department in Cincinnati.

August 1, 2013

Demasi criticizes the state attorney's office, saying that prosecutors weren't doing enough to keep career criminals off the streets. The chief spoke out after a criminal with a long arrest history was shot by West Palm Beach police on July 31. Officers say that Moses McCray, of Boynton Beach, twice tried to run over officers with his car and then pointed a weapon at them. Demasi blamed the state attorney's office for not doing enough to keep such criminals off the streets.

August 12, 2013

Chief Demasi and Palm Beach County State Attorney Dave Aronberg declare a truce and vow to work closer together.

February 13, 2014

Chief cites a lack of officers, old police cruisers, and a building in desperate need of renovations as three critical issues plaguing the department.

March 17, 2014

Chief Demasi announces his intention to retire in May.
