TEMPE, AZ (CBS5) -

Police are investigating the events leading up to the death of an Arizona State freshman, Naomi McClendon, 18, of Manhattan, KS.

Tempe Police Sgt. Mike Pooley said although no foul play is suspected, charges are likely.

Police said McClendon was spotted on surveillance video early Sunday morning at 922 Place, an off-campus student apartment building. Police described McClendon as "extremely intoxicated."

Surveillance video outside a 10th floor apartment shows McClendon straddling the balcony railing, according to police. Pooley said the teen then lost her balance and fell 10 floors.

Police said alcohol played a chief role in the teenager's death.

On Monday, McClendon's friends, like Emily Mahoney, chose to remember her as an honors student with musical talent and a bright future.

"I'm wearing my Led Zeppelin shirt today because it was her favorite band," Mahoney said.

Tempe police and firefighters have struggled to combat underage drinking on and around the Arizona State campus. In the last year, firefighters said they've had beer cans thrown at them from the fifth floor of the same student high-rise and police have responded to more than 200 calls for service.

Three years ago, a similar incident took place just blocks away from 922 Place at another student high-rise where a 20-year-old woman died after a fall from a fifth-floor balcony. Police said alcohol was a factor in that incident as well.

"I think in college especially, you spend a lot of time thinking about the future," Mahoney said. "When that's taken away from someone, it's pretty scary."

Mahoney called Sunday morning's incident a tragedy that took the life of a bright, young student but police believe McClendon was also a victim of underage drinking.

Tempe police are now looking for the persons responsible for supplying alcohol to the teenager.
