Court rules USC donor need not pay seat license fee

Associated Press

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - The University of South Carolina can't require a donor with whom it had an existing agreement to buy a seat license fee before purchasing athletic tickets.

The state Supreme Court ruled Wednesday that a member of the university's Gamecock Club already had an agreement giving him the opportunity to buy football and basketball tickets for life when South Carolina started charging ticket holders a separate seat licensing fee.

After naming the university as beneficiary of a $100,000 life insurance policy, George M. Lee had an agreement with the school for the lifetime "opportunity to purchase tickets" to football and basketball games.

But years later, the university began requiring Gamecock Club members to buy a seat license before being able to buy tickets, and Lee sued.

The university declined to comment Wednesday.
