Firefighters cut hole in house to remove obese man

By Brian Entin

PALM SPRING, FL (WFLX) - Dozens of firefighters helped remove a man trapped in his Palm Springs home Wednesday.

Friends say the obese man fell Tuesday and was stuck inside the house unable to move until fire crews arrived.

Palm Beach County Fire Rescue's "bariatric" unit, along with a special operations team, came up with a plan to remove the man.

After cutting open the back of the home, they used a special stretcher and placed wooden planks in a coordinated effort to get the man to the ambulance. "We have one special unit in Palm Beach County that can handle patients that weigh up to 1,000 pounds," said Palm Beach County Fire Rescue Public Information Officer Captain Albert Borroto.

The patient was alert and talking to firefighters when he was taken away.

His best friend says it is hard to move inside the home because so many things are packed inside it.

Fire crews wore masks entering and leaving the home.
