WEST PALM BEACH, FL (WFLX) - The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office is giving drivers a fair warning that they will be conducting a "traffic enforcement initiative" on Friday.
The sheriff's office posted on their Facebook page that the campaign is being prompted by April being National Distracted Driving Awareness Month.
PBSO said the traffic division will be conducting traffic enforcement in unincorporated Palm Beach County, enforcing all traffic violations with a focus on distracted drivers.
Officials said the initiative is being conducted to reduce the increasing issue in Palm Beach County. They hope the additional enforcement and education will make roads safer.
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration figures show that drivers are four times more likely to be involved in a traffic crash due to distracted driving, such as cellphone use, texting, eating and drinking.
In 2012, about 421,000 people were injured in wrecks involving a distracted driver, this was a 9 percent increase from the estimated 387,000 people injured in 2011.
