ST. LUCIE COUNTY, FL (WFLX) - The St. Lucie County Superintendent of Schools is apologizing after a handful of school employees were arrested this year on charges involving inappropriate contact with students.
Genelle Zoratti Yost says the safety and security of their students is paramount and even a single case of inappropriate behavior is one too many.
Yost has spent nearly four decades in education, but this is her first year as superintendent.
She's had to contend with the news that at least 4 school employees were arrested on charges ranging from interfering with the custody of a minor, to having sex with a student.
Yost says there are criminal background checks conducted and all teachers must abide by a code of principles and ethical conduct.
She calls this past year a challenging one. "It's unfortunate the misconduct occurred but if there is a silver lining, it would be that our students felt comfortable seeking out a caring adult to which they confided."
Yost could not discuss the particulars of any of the ongoing criminal cases, but says once an allegation of inappropriate conduct has been made the case is immediately turned over to law enforcement.
