(RNN) - The official start of summer is days away. While you're lathering on the sunscreen and planning tropical excursions, your favorite artists are pumping out enough music to fill your road trip playlist.

It's a long one this week, so let's get started.

More Maroon 5

Maroon 5 has a new record deal and a new album on the way. V, the fifth album from Adam Levine and company, will drop Sept. 2 on Interscope.

An unnamed single will hit radio this summer and tour dates are coming shortly.

Jason Mraz announces new album, releases single

Jason Mraz's new album Yes! will drop on July 15.

And with the announcement came the release of the first single from the album, Love Someone. The acoustic ballad starts out slow but grows in intensity the longer you listen, and is only slightly reminiscent of past Mraz hits like I Won't Give Up.

Every Monday, Mraz will premiere a video of a new song from the album, recorded live with Raining Jane at The Om Studio on his ranch.

The singer also offers free digital downloads if you pre-order and several different album packages on his website, including custom guitars, T-shirts, phone cases and more.

Yes! will contain songs about "love, friendship, healing, hope and consciousness," Mraz said in a release.

The 14-song album follows Mraz's 2012 album, Love Is A Four Letter Word.

Mimi's new album

Stream Mariah Carey's new album, overblown title and all, on iTunes Radio this week.

Me. I Am Mariah ... The Elusive Chanteuse is available on demand until it releases Tuesday at bit.ly/1jT08HV.

Hangout Music Fest

The three-day beach party known as the Hangout Music Fest closed Sunday ... and we are still wallowing in a pool of regret for missing it.

If you couldn't make it to the sugar white sands of Gulf Shores, AL, MTV has a handful of performances up to help you experience parts of the weekend for yourself at bit.ly/hangoutmusicfest.

Meanwhile, after you good folks at Hangout get a few days (weeks) of sleep, we have a few suggestions for 2015 – Paramore (seriously, why hasn't this happened yet?), ZZ Ward (darling of the 2014 festival circuit), Ms Mr, Daughter, The National, City and Colour (because, Dallas Green) and Fleetwood Mac (because, why not?).

And if you brought Gary Clark Jr. back, absolutely nobody would be too upset.

We'll see you on the beach in 2015.

Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers announce fall tour

Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers will tour North America starting in August.

The tour comes in support of their new album, Hypnotic Eye, which the band is giving away for free to all ticket buyers.

Opening tour dates will include a guest appearance by Steve Winwood.

The tour runs from Aug. 3 through Oct. 10. For ticket information, visit www.tompetty.com/tour.

Hello, high honors

Lionel Richie will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award at the BET Awards this summer.

Richie began his career as a Commodore before launching a successful solo career, selling more than 100 million albums along the way.

Previous Lifetime Achievement winners include Whitney Houston and Diana Ross.

The BET Awards air June 29.

Health scare and life lesson

Sum 41 frontman Deryck Whibley says he's been hospitalized for the last month from a liver and kidney collapse due to alcoholism.

Whibley wrote about his month-long hospitalization on his blog, saying too much drinking through the years took its toll on his body.

Whibley collapsed one night and his fiancee rushed him to the hospital. Whibley says he was sedated for a week before waking up hooked up to IVs.

"Needless to say it scared me straight. I finally realized I can't drink anymore. If I have one drink the doc's (sic) say I will die. I'm not preaching or anything but just always drink responsibly. I didn't, and look where that got me," Whibley wrote, adding "I never thought I would ever say that."

Whibley says once he's better, he'll be getting back to making more music.

We wish him good health and a complete recovery.

Paul McCartney cancels tour due to illness

Speaking of health scares, Paul McCartney has canceled his entire Japan tour due to an unknown illness.

Last week the Beatle announced he had a virus and would have to cancel several concerts. A week later the remaining shows also were scrapped because the doctors ordered rest.

"Paul is still not feeling better and this cancellation is unavoidable. He was hoping to be better but the doctors have ordered him complete rest. Paul has been extremely moved by the messages from his fans and is upset to be letting them down," a spokesperson said in a statement on McCartney's Japanese Tour website.

McCartney's next stop on his Out There tour is Seoul, South Korea on May 28. He will then embark on a 19-date U.S. tour.

We hope Mr. McCartney gets better soon. In the meantime, check out his latest video for the song Appreciate.

And finally ...

The essence of good music are musicians without a script, just going at it with all they have.

That essence was recently captured outside a Kroger store by three random guys who apparently didn't know each other ... and their impromptu jam session.

We think these guys should make it official and become a band.
