Suspect in custody:PSL man killed, boy shot

PORT ST. LUCIE, FL (WFLX)-- A suspect is in custody after a 70-year-old man was killed and a 7-year old boy was shot Tuesday night at their Port St. Lucie home.

Brandon Lamar Hawkins was arrested in Tradition, Fla. at 2:30 a.m. on Wednesday in connection with the case, according to Sgt. Frank Sabol of the Port St. Lucie Police Department.

Police said the incident started at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday at 213 SW Kentwood Rd.

Investigators said Hawkins was arguing with his girlfriend before shooting the woman's 70-year-old stepfather.

As the girlfriend tried to escape to a neighbor's house with her young son, Hawkins shot the 7-year-old boy as they ran.

The boy was airlifted to St. Mary's Trauma Center in West Palm Beach where he is in critical condition. The stepfather was taken to a local Port St. Lucie hospital for treatment before dying.

Hawkins left the scene in a black pickup truck, which police found abandoned at a local gas station parking lot located in the 300 block of SW Tulip Boulevard.

According to police, Hawkins is currently being held at the Port St. Lucie Police Department.
