PORT ST. LUCIE, FL (WFLX) - A 34-year-old Port St. Lucie man is facing charges of lewd and lascivious conduct with a 14-year-old girl.
On Thursday, Robert Alan Smith was arrested in Martin County by Port St. Lucie police.
Police said the investigation into Smith's activities with minors began on March 30, 2014 at around 12:30 a.m., when officers encountered Smith at Kiwanis Park, located at 1320 SE Floresta Drive, hanging out with two 14-year-old girls.
At that time, police and the girls' parents told Smith to stop having contact with the girls.
Smith is accused of continuing contact with the two girls via instant messaging and phone contact. The father of one of the girls contacted police after he discovered that his daughter was still communicating with Smith via instant messaging.
The father learned of the communication due to the fact that the girl's tablet is connected to his phone and he could see the communication between the two.
As the investigation continued, detectives said they learned that Smith was actually carrying on a relationship with one of the girls and would pick her up at her home and then hang out in his car.
However, there was no evidence of sex between Smith and the underage girl, according to investigators.
The girl did confirm that Smith and she did kiss about three or four times between Feb. 1 and April 18, while they hung out in his car.
Authorities located Smith in Martin County, placed him under arrest and took him to the Martin County Jail.
