Officials announce new plan for becoming US citizen

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

There's a new plan in place to help thousands of immigrants in Middle Tennessee become American citizens.

City and federal officials unveiled Pathway for New Americans on Wednesday.

Nashville Mayor Karl Dean signed a deal with federal officials to provide new resources for immigrants to become citizens, including free library access and classes.

Dean said this is especially important for Nashville because of the large migrant population here.

"Obviously the main attraction for Nashville is that we are a medium to large city that has seen a significant increase in immigration," said Dean. "I think we're a city that has demonstrated quite clearly that we want the immigration process to work for all concerned."

Along with the program, Dean said he wants to work with employers who hire immigrant workers so they can start offering more information as to how to help these workers.
