Couple jailed after marijuana plants discovered in yard

PORT ST. LUCIE, FL (WFLX) - A dispute, over a missing tree, ended with a man and woman from Port St. Lucie behind bars.

"We wanted to give our hand a try at vegetables," said Kevin Rerko about the vegetable plants he and his family are growing. But it's a missing plant in the front yard that has him upset.

"There used to be a poinciana tree we got as a gift from a friend for my daughter's birthday." Rerko says his daughter looked at it every day. "We had planted it, and it was growing beautifully."

But on Sunday, the 6-year-old girl was in tears. "My daughter goes Daddy, Daddy my tree is gone."

He had no proof, but after some prior run-ins, he suspected a neighbor destroyed it and called police. "They went up to the door, and he wouldn't answer."
What police did next is look over the neighbor's fence and what they saw surprised them. They found marijuana plants growing in the backyard of Bryan and Kathleen Martin.
Officers talked to Kathleen who admitted they were growing the plants for personal use because, she said, it helps Bryan sleep. The couple was arrested on drug charges.
Rerko says this spot in his front yard won't be empty for long. "We're going to replace it again.

Most definitely, we're going to make it whole."

He hopes something good will grow out of a bad situation.
