The Wireless Registry, which allows businesses and individuals to take control over their wireless identities has launched a proximal API enabling a whole new level of wireless awareness.

WASHINGTON and SAN FRANCISCO, June 19, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- The Wireless Registry Inc., the first global registry for wireless names and identifiers, today announced the launch of the first open and free "proximal API" available to developers anywhere in the world.  This Proximal API enables mobile applications to deliver content or trigger actions based on the wireless signals being detected. This new function allows mobile applications to interact with the billions of wireless signals, like WiFi, Bluetooth and iBeacon, which surround us, yet focuses on the owner of the signal having first say on how they are used.

"We're very excited about launching this to the world," said Patrick Parodi, co-founder and CEO of The Wireless Registry.  "Today we're working with several developers who are using our open source API, and we're already seeing the impact that access to the Proximal API is having for apps across a wide variety of industries."

The Wireless Registry's Proximal API enables mobile applications to associate content to ambient wireless signals in a way that respects the privacy and control of the owners of those signals – an industry first.  The Wireless Registry's infrastructure offers opportunities for application developers that range from public polling and proximity messaging to emergency response and virtually every industry in between.

"The Wireless Registry's Proximal API opens the door to the future of emergency response," explained Stephen Owens, creator and co-founder of Page-Out, LLC.  "The Wireless Registry will enhance our ability to obtain information quickly, because homeowners or building managers can privately and securely associate information relevant to first responders to registered wireless signals using the Page-Out application."

"I'm happy to be a part of The Wireless Registry's Proximal API launch, and this is an exciting time for app developers," said Kevin Ostrowski, founder of Yopine, a micropolling application.  "At Yopine, an integral part of our platform relies on a device's ability to detect when another device is using our app.  Using The Wireless Registry's Proximal API, devices running Yopine can do that faster and more accurately, while consuming less battery power."

"The Wireless Registry's API has helped us reinvent the way people listen to music," said Daniele Calabrese, founder of Soundtracker.  "Our geosocial music service enables users to have real-time social listening experiences. The Wireless Registry allows Soundtracker users to associate the audio track being played with the wireless signals of the device, and therefore, enables other apps to detect your song without using GPS or 'checking in'."

Developers, individuals and businesses can register their wireless names by visiting The Wireless Registry's website, where developers can also get access to the Proximal API: http://www.wirelessregistry.com/.  The Wireless Registry offers registration of Wireless IDs such as MAC addresses or beacon IDs, and wireless name registration options based on a model similar to domain name registrations.

"The Wireless Registry is building needed infrastructure for The Internet of Things," said Stillman Bradish, co-founder and COO of The Wireless Registry. "The company focused first on privacy and taking control of your wireless identity in its offerings. The new proximal API honors this system and allows innovative functions for developers while maintaining the ability to take control and opt out at every step."
