PALM BEACH COUNTY, FL (WFLX) - With all of the rain, residents are warned to be aware of standing water near their homes to avoid mosquitoes that carry viruses. The latest cases involve the virus chikungunya.
According to the Palm Beach County Health Department, even a mosquito's eggs can have a small amount of the virus. Because the mosquitoes that carry viruses are daytime biters, residents should wear mosquito spray when outdoors. They should also get rid of standing water inside potted plants inside and outside of their homes.
So far, there are seven people who have been diagnosed with the chikungunya virus in Palm Beach County. The virus causes flu like symptoms.
There is no vaccine for it.
