Lawmakers in the Bay State gave final approval Thursday to legislation that will gradually raise the minimum wage to $11 an hour by 2017, that's up from $8.

A spokeswoman for Governor Deval Patrick said he got the bill Thursday evening, and is expected to sign it into law.

President Barack Obama, who supports a nationwide increase to $10.10 an hour, applauded the move.

White Massachusetts is taking the lead among states, the city of Seattle will still offer the highest minimum wage anywhere in the country.
