Police and Coast Guard rescue teen girls stranded by strong current

FORT PIERCE, FL (WFLX) - Five teens are lucky to be alive. Fort Pierce police officer Keith Holmes jumped into the water with a life preserver to rescue the teenagers Wednesday morning.

The girls were stuck on the rocks in the Fort Pierce Inlet Tuesday afternoon. Police say they were surfing when the strong current pushed them into the rocks.

Police and the coast guard quickly responded. The St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office boat pulled alongside the rocks. Deputy Sean kane and Coast Guard Petty Officer Wesley Samosuk helped steer the boat and pull the girls to safety.

One of the girls was taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The other four were released to their parents.

All three men say luck was on their side. They were actually putting away the boats when the 911 call was made.

Fortunately there was one rescue boat still on the water.
