Former IHOP owner, wife plead guilty to federal charges

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The former owner of seven IHOP restaurants in two states is pleading guilty to charges in federal court.

Tarek Elkafrawi was in federal court Thursday morning pleading guilty to all 53 counts of a federal indictment.

The charges against the Wood County man range from money laundering to mail fraud to harboring illegal aliens.

Elkafrawi's wife, Kelly, also pleaded guilty to two charges in the case. Both were set for trial in federal court in Toledo Monday.

Tarek Elkafrawi faces up to 65 years in federal prison when sentenced.  Kelly could get up to 20 years in prison.

The case goes back to 2012 when the Elkafrawis and more than a dozen other people were charged  with violating federal law.
