Police warn of IRS scam

Posted: Updated:

BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. (AP) - Police say a 72-year-old woman is out $12,000 after falling victim to a scam involving a fake IRS representative.

The woman told Boynton Beach she received a call on Monday from a man claiming to be from the IRS. He told her she'd be arrested if she didn't make an immediate payment.

The victim was instructed to buy 24 Green Dot prepaid cards for $500 each. She then called the man back with the card numbers. When he called back to say the IRS needed another $12,000, she realized it was a scam and called her son. They contacted police.

Police say another Boynton Beach woman fell for the same scam last month.

Police say the scam is so sophisticated that the calls appear to come from the IRS.
