Some question plans for development in rare forest

Posted: Updated:

MIAMI (AP) - A plan to develop endangered forest land in Miami-Dade County is causing alarm among some environmentalists.

About 88 acres of pine rockland was sold this month by the University of Miami to a Palm Beach County developer who plans to build a Wal-Mart, LA Fitness, Chik-fil-A, Chili's and 900 apartments.

The developer has agreed to set aside 40 acres for a preserve, but that's not enough for some observers.

Dennis Olle, a board member of Tropical Audubon and the North American Butterfly Association, is demanding an investigation into the deal.

He tells the Miami Herald (http://hrld.us/W7hcGC), "You wonder how things end up being endangered? This is how."
