JUPITER, FL (WFLX) - A Jupiter family is bringing light to tragedy a month after their loved one lost his life during a snorkeling accident at the Jupiter inlet.
The Harris family has started a foundation in honor of Andrew Red Harris.
Scott Harris talks for the first time about his son Andrew. Last month, Andrew was snorkeling at the Jupiter Inlet when he was struck by a boat. "This was an awful thing," said Scott Harris.
Andrew's siblings are still coping. His younger brother Ryan, idolized him. "The happiest day of both their lives, was the Saturday before the accident when Ryan got drafted by the Red Sox and they were so excited about it. And then the next day becomes the saddest day," said Ryan.
Andrew's friends are still at a loss for words.
Harris said, "We have to recognize that as much as we're grieving and mourning Andrew's loss, so are a lot of his friends and again, he had a lot of his friends and a lot of people are hurting.
But out of this hurt, comes healing. The Harris' have started the Andrew Red Harris Foundation. "The foundation's intent is to further young adults in life. Help them transition as they grow," said Harris.
Money raised will create mentoring programs as well as send high school students to college. Scott said this is what Andrew would have wanted. "Well it's all we have left," said Harris. "It's certainly not our choice but it's all we have left and I find it helps me to keep me busy to feel like I'm doing something to help his legacy."
A charity fundraising event for the foundation will kick off on the weekend of October 12 at the Tequesta Country Club.
There will be a luncheon as well as a golf tournament, one of Andrew's favorite sports.
