Volusia woman charged with stealing from agency

Posted: Updated:

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) - A Volusia County woman has been charged with stealing money from a marketing company that receives funding through hotel bed taxes.

Records show that 40-year-old Nicole Carni was arrested and charged Monday with felony organized scheme to defraud after taking more than $5,000 in 2011 from the Southeast Volusia Advertising Authority.

Authorities say Carni used agency-contracted workers to do work on her personal residence. Carni served as SVAA's director from June 2011 to January 2012. She was released on $5,000 bail Monday. It wasn't immediately known if she had an attorney.

SVAA is a quasi-governmental agency that markets tourism throughout southeast Volusia County. It is funded by bed taxes collected from the region's hotels and short-term resort properties.

The Volusia County Council appoints SVAA's board members.
