Man charged with threatening Miami-Dade commission

Posted: Updated:

MIAMI (AP) - A South Florida man is facing multiple felony counts after authorities say he threatened to shoot Miami-Dade county commissioners during a meeting.

Speaking at a podium in front of the commissioners Tuesday evening, 54-year-old Jose Antonio Fernandez accused the county of confiscating his land. Authorities say he then said that if the county sold his home, he would have the right to shoot every member of the commission.

Miami-Dade police arrested Fernandez outside the commission chambers and charged him with 13 counts of threatening to harm a public servant. That's one count for each of the 12 commissioners, plus the mayor.

Fernandez was being held on $97,500 bail. His public defender declined comment.

The Miami Herald (http://goo.gl/0vYrM7 ) reports that the home Fernandez gave as his address owes the county $316,000 and is scheduled to be auctioned this month.
