Fla. paramedic resigns after drug arrest

Posted: Updated:

PINELLAS PARK, Fla. (AP) - A Pinellas Park firefighter and SWAT paramedic has resigned after he was accused of selling prescription drugs.

Pinellas Park spokesman Tim Caddell says 38-year-old James A. Comer submitted a handwritten resignation late Wednesday.

The Tampa Bay Times (http://bit.ly/1t8bgrf ) reports Comer was arrested Saturday on 16 counts of dealing or possessing drugs. His medical license was suspended and he was placed on paid leave, pending an investigation. Comer also worked part-time in the emergency room at Northside Hospital.

Reports show he was arrested in the hospital parking lot. Officials say he had 184 prescription pills, including OxyContin, morphine and hydromorphone.

Comer remained in the Pinellas County Jail on Thursday morning. It's not known whether he's hired a lawyer.
