Chikungunya testing begins in Boynton Beach By Rachel Leigh | July 24, 2014 at 8:17 PM EST - Updated July 21 at 7:00 PM BOYNTON BEACH, FL (WFLX) - Public health leaders are taking a proactive approach to chikungunya prevention in Palm Beach County. On Thursday, teams from the Florida Department of Health are going door-to-door in Boynton Beach talking to residents about the mosquito-borne virus. The first locally-acquired case of chikungunya happened earlier this month in Boynton Beach. The virus is not fatal but causes fever and severe joint pain. It is transferred by mosquitos that bite an infected person, then bite someone else. On Thursday and this weekend, crews will collect blood samples to test for the virus and share information with residents. Experts said the best way to avoid getting the virus is by draining any standing water near your home and covering yourself with bug spray and/or long sleeves when you go outside.
