Potentially deadly bacteria found in Indian River Lagoon

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FL (WFLX) - Scientists are urging caution after they found a potentially deadly bacteria in the Indian River Lagoon.

Researchers at FAU's Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute say it's called "vibrio vulnificus", and it causes about 80,000 illnesses and 100 deaths nationwide each year.

Scientists say it shouldn't prevent you from getting in the lagoon water -- unless you have open cuts. Eating fish from the lagoon is also safe as long as it's cooked.
