Smell forces building evacuation

PALM BEACH COUNTY, FL (WFLX) - A medical building was evacuated in Wellington due to reports of a strange odor Friday.

Palm Beach County Fire Rescue crews responded to the scene in the 3000 block of South State Road 7.

Workers complained of a sulfur smell, nausea and headaches.

First responders evaluated 31 people; five were transported to a hospital.

According to on scene Palm Beach County Battalion Chief Bill Rowley, three firefighters were taken by ambulance for evaluation due to minor irritation from being inside the building

Investigators determined a battery backup system leaked.

They said the smell was not hazardous, just an irritant.

The building was ventilated and the all clear signal was given before 5 p.m. Friday.
