Police meet with Point Place residents on reducing crime

POINT PLACE, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Residents in Point Place are stepping up and working with police to put an end to crime in the area.

A meeting was held Wednesday with Toledo and Washington Township police present to help residents figure out how they can combat recent crime. Many residents at the meeting say they were there because they've been a victim of crime, or know someone who has.

"What can we do better? What can we do to help our neighbors? How can we help the community?" asked Kellie Schlachter, owner of DK Treasures.

Schlachter says she's noticed more and more neighbors posting about break-ins and theft on Facebook.

More than 100 people attended the forum Wednesday to share their concerns with police and ask questions.

"I hope it shows other parts of Toledo that community services, block watch, when citizens come together, things get done," said Toledo Police Deputy Chief George Kral.

Police say the most important things people can do are be alert, know their neighbors, keep their homes well-lit, and trim shrubs around their house so windows and doors are visible to others. They also say a new community service officer has been assigned to the area and will help cut down on crime.

"We just want a better way to keep our community safe so people come here and build businesses and move here," Schlachter said.

Police say they hope to make meetings like Wednesday's a more regular occurrence.
