PHOENIX (CBS5) -

A fire that heavily damaged a Phoenix church early Saturday morning remains under investigation.

There was significant damage to a classroom at St. Mary's Manor but the main sanctuary was spared, said Phoenix fire Capt. Scott McDonald.

Fire crews rolled up at 6515 N. 39th Ave. at around 1:15 a.m.

"I was asleep in the parish house next door and was awakened by frantic door bell ringing," said Craig Bustrin, priest. "When I answered the door I was faced with lights from about 20 fire trucks and police cars."

"They were saying, 'the church is on fire, the church is on fire,'" Bustrin said.

No one was inside the church and nobody was hurt.

Bustrin said one of the biggest challenges will be taking the church pipe organ apart and cleaning thousands of pieces.

Fire investigators are still trying to pinpoint the cause of the fire.
