Golfer charged with attacking two men with putter

ROYAL PALM BEACH, FL (WFLX) - A day of golf turned into a night in jail for a Wellington man.

On Labor Day, Michael Rich went to the Madison Green Golf Course in Royal Palm Beach to play a round of golf, according to the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office.

While at the course, Rich was paired with a trio of men who were also hitting the links.

Deputies said while the four were playing golf just before 8 a.m., Rich asked one of the men to mark his ball while he putted.

PBSO says an argument broke out between Rich and the other golfers over the marking of the ball.

Deputies said Rich then used his putter and struck one of them in the leg causing the putter to break.

According to PBSO, Rich then used the broken putter to come after a second man -- swinging it like a sword.

The second person was struck on the wrist.

Rich told investigators that during the initial argument, one of the golfers ran up to him and pushed him away using a golf club.

Deputies said, Rich told them, he swung his club to protect himself.

Rich was arrested by PBSO on battery charges and released from jail Tuesday morning.
