Martin County testing new emergency notification system

By Chris Stewart

STUART, FL (WFLX) - Martin County is making sure its emergency notification system "Code Red" is ready for emergencies.

The system is being tested Wednesday morning, and residents should have received a phone call around 10 a.m.

The call will be about a minute long, and inform people it's a test. It will also encourage people to register their cellphone number for the service.

People can do that by going to the county's emergency management page.

"Code Red", a system that went online in June, allows the county to notify the public of an emergency or anything that may affect their welfare.

The system was put into place in July when a leaking 30,000-gallon propane tank forced the evacuation of people in Tequesta.

The county says Wednesday will be the largest test of "Code Red" since the county started using it.

Emergency managers want to make sure the system can handle tens of thousands of calls in a widespread emergency.
