LIMA, OH (WOIO) -

Chardon shooter TJ Lane escaped from the Allen Oakwood Correctional Facility in Lima, Ohio, along with two other prisoners, Lindsey Bruce and Clifford E. Opperud around 7:40 p.m. on Thursday.

Lane was captured less than six hours later, about a 100 yards from the prison, according to the Prison Warden. Two officers with the Ohio State Highway Patrol special response team captured him on the north side of the prison, near a church on Bluelick Road.

He was taken in custody without incident, and returned to the prison.

Bruce, 33, was captured immediately after the trio escaped. He was serving a life sentence for kidnapping, aggravated murder and tampering with evidence.

Opperud, 45, was not caught until around 4:00 a.m. The Ohio State Patrol's Findley Post tells 19 Action news that he was still in Lima and found near prison. Opperud was serving a 12-year-sentence for aggravated robbery, burglary, and kidnapping.

A prison watchdog group says Lane had been held in the protective control unit, which is used for the more dangerous inmate at the Allen Oakwood Correctional Facility.

According to Chardon Police, they called in extra officers in to help keep the victim's families safe in Chardon during the prison break.

Chardon Schools say they will NOT have classes today, but counseling will be available at the middle and high school for those in need.

The Chardon football team will play as scheduled Friday evening at 7:00 p.m. The Hilltoppers take on Canton South at Canton South.

The superintendent released this statement:

Local and State law enforcement have confirmed that TJ Lane has escaped from an Allen County prison.  Chardon Local School District officials have been in contact with law enforcement and are closely monitoring the situation.

Our thoughts and prayers today go out to the families of Demetrius, Russell and Danny and all others affected by the tragedy as well as by the troubling events from Thursday evening.

The safety and well-being of all students, staff and community remain our highest priority.  Given the profound impact of these developments  on our entire community, all schools in the Chardon Local School District will be closed on Friday, September 12, 2014, in order that students and staff  may spend time with family and other forms of support to aid in the healing process.   A decision concerning extracurricular activities will be made Friday morning.

The school district will also provide as much social and emotional support for students, staff and community as possible during this difficult time.  Therefore, the Chardon High School and Chardon Middle School buildings will be open Friday with counseling and other support service available in each school.  Those seeking assistance or just wanting to talk are encouraged to come to either building.

Chardon remains a strong and resilient community that has rallied around each other before and I am confident that we will continue to do so now and in the future. Chardon Schools along with local law enforcement officials will continue to monitor the developments throughout the night and will stay in close contact with our school community as this situation develops further.

Michael P. Hanlon, Jr., Ph.D.
Superintendent

TJ Lane shot and killed three students and wounded three others at Chardon High School in February 2012. He opened fire in the cafeteria.

17-year-old Russell King Jr., 16-year-old Daniel Parmertor, and 16-year-old Demetrius Hewlin were killed. 17-year-old Nick Walczak is paralyzed from the waist down, and 18-year-old Joy Rickers and one other student were injured.

Lane wore a white T-shirt to his sentencing with "killer" written across the front.

The Parmertor Family tweeted: "All your prayers & support are a comfort to our family during this stressful time. We are together and staying strong."

Allen Correctional opened in 1994, and houses 1,635 inmates with 439 staff. In an April 2014 inspection, the prison was at a 115 percent capacity rate, with 217 inmates over their capacity of 1,418.
