Burglary suspect airlifted to hospital

PORT ST LUCIE, FL (WFLX) - Port St. Lucie police say a burglary suspect had to be airlifted to an area hospital after he was seriously injured in a break-in attempt.

Around 7:30 p.m. Sunday, police officers responded to a home in the 1600 block of S.W. Penrose Avenue to investigate a possible burglary in progress.

Once on scene, officers found the homeowner applying towels to the wound of a man who had allegedly tried to break into his house. The suspect's leg had been severely injured when he tried to kick in a window, according to police.

Police say the suspect had been drinking and watching a football game at a friend's home nearby when for an unknown reason began screaming and banging on the front door. When no one answered, he broke in through the front window and crawled into the home, police say.

The homeowner, who was inside with his family, grabbed a 2x2 piece of wood to defend himself and pushed the man, causing him to fall back out of the window and onto the front lawn, according to police.

The homeowner told police the suspect had rambled on about his family being kidnapped.  Concerned for his family, police went to his house to do a welfare check but found nothing wrong.

Police say charges of burglary to an occupied dwelling are forthcoming. The suspect remains in serious condition at a local hospital.
