Proposal could affect taxi traffic in West Palm

By Ashleigh Walters

WEST PALM BEACH, FL (WFLX) - West Palm Beach City Commissioners are considering an ordinance that could influence taxi traffic in busy areas downtown.

The concern is that a heavy influx of taxi cabs create congestion and confusion during late-night hours in some parts of downtown.

City leaders are considering an ordinance that would convert metered spaces into taxi stands from midnight to 5 a.m.  The spaces would become tow-away zones during taxi stand hours.

The proposal suggests that the taxi stands would encourage flow of taxis in one direction as not to interfere with businesses.

Only vehicles for hire with appropriate decals and licenses would be allowed to use the spaces.  The agenda item suggests there is plenty of parking in the area

The taxi stands are proposed at the following locations:
* Clematis Street 200 block, south side, from crosswalk going East; 3 spaces.
* Clematis Street 300 block, south side, from crosswalk going West; 3 spaces.
* Clematis Street 500 block, south side, from crosswalk going West, 3 spaces.
* CityPlace area, Hibiscus St., north side, from crosswalk going West, 3 spaces
* City Place area, Rosemary Blvd., 500 block, West side, from crosswalk going North, 3 spaces.
* Datura St., 100 block, north side, West of Flagler Dr., 2 spaces

Meanwhile, the controversial transportation services Uber and Lyft continue to be discussed as they have arrived in the city.  Uber does not own the vehicles nor does it pay the drivers, and the service is not classified as a vehicle for hire in a similar way to taxi cabs.
