More people having plastic surgery for selfies

JUPITER, FL (WFLX) - A new trend is happening in plastic surgeon offices in our area.  Doctors are saying their patients are going under the knife to look better in selfies.

It's not easy to take the best selfie. You need the right lighting, angle, filter, and -- in some cases -- the right plastic surgeon?! "Technology has changed the whole playing field," said Dr. Harold Befitis, a plastic surgeon.

Dr. Befitis recently noticed the trend in his Jupiter office. "We've seen patients come forward, sharing with us that the way they look in Facetime, Skyping, selfies is not what they want to look like in the real world."

They've asked for everything from facelifts to liposuction to nose jobs.

Erin Drinnen had her nose fixed by doctor. "It was crooked, and it was collapsing on one side. I did have problems breathing, but it did not look good in pictures."

Drinnen is one of those patients who came in for some work. "Up close, you take selfies, you see how you look, and I really didn't like how my nose was looking. It was bothering me, so I wanted to do something about it."

She went under the knife five months ago. The doctor took cartilage from her ear to put into her nose.

An intense surgery that she says was well worth it. "It bothered me for a while, but it really brought it to my attention when you see it, because pictures don't lie. When it's right in front of your face, you're kinda like 'Ew', I guess that's what I look like.'"

Dr. Bafitis says this trend is happening in plastic surgeons' offices around the world. Some say it will continue with more people getting "a little work" done to look better online. "It's not that much of a difference, butm to them, it's a massive difference."

Plastic surgery isn't for everyone, but if you are considering it, make sure you go to a board certified plastic surgeon. Otherwise, test out those filters on Instagram -- some can make those fine lines magically disappear.
