MARTIN COUNTY, FL (WFLX) - A natural gas leak outside a Palm City 7-Eleven station caused road closures and an unknown number of evacuations Monday morning, said Fire Rescue spokesman Bill Schobel.

Construction crews digging outside the gas station reported the leak just before 10:40 a.m. after they ruptured a large commercial line at Southwest Martin Highway and Southwest High Meadows Avenue, Schobel said.

Homes along Southwest Coco Palm Drive and Southwest Pindo Palm Lane were evacuated, said sheriff's spokeswoman Christine Christofek.

Originally, students at Hidden Oaks Middle School were going to be evacuated as a precaution. Because the leak was stopped, the evacuation was canceled, according to the Martin County Sheriff's Office. It will be a normal school day.

Traffic is again moving on 714.
