RIVIERA BEACH, FL (WFLX) - An unexpected scare on a Halloween weekend cruise had nearly 1,000 Bahamas Celebration cruise passengers waiting to return to the Port of Palm Beach Saturday.

A spokesperson with the cruise Bahamas Celebration says the ship hit an unknown object in the Bahamas Friday night, delaying the return of the ship by nearly a day.

The cruise line says 960 passengers were transferred onto the Bimini SuperFast, another cruise line, to bring the passengers to Miami on Saturday.

From Miami, Port of Palm Beach authorities say 18 shuttle buses brought about 810 of those passengers back to Palm Beach early Sunday morning.

A Bahamas Celebration spokesperson says no one was hurt or ever in any danger. All of the passengers put on life jackets as staff followed other emergency steps that they practice every week, according to the cruise line.

The passengers were put in accommodations in various resorts on the island.

The ship will remain in the Bahamas where the damage will be assessed.

The Bahamas Celebration has canceled all cruises for the first two weeks of November. The cruise line says passengers will be refunded or alternate arrangements will be made.

Manuel Almira, Executive Director of the Port of Palm Beach, says having the ship out of operation causes a financial hit for the port, losing profits from parking and ticket fees. "We're hoping to hear early next week that they went ahead and they charter another vessel. That's one of the options that they're looking at. If that's the case well then we might have lost a couple of weeks at best," Almira said.

The Bahamas Celebration hasn't said anything more about what the ship may have hit.
