Mother arrested after police find six children left in filthy conditions

LAKE WORTH, FL (WFLX) - Six children, ages 8, 6, 3, 2, 1 and 3-months-old were found left alone in an apartment at 24th Ave North in Lake Worth, according to the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office.

A friend, who went to the residence, noticed the mother, Maria Encino, was not home. The woman told investigators from the sheriff's office she saw four children in the living room and that the infant was in a bedroom closet in her crib with clothing over her. The infant, according to PBSO, had feces covering her head and back. The 1-year-old was also covered in feces, according to deputies.

Investigators say the kitchen was filled with dishes and food on the sink. The older children told deputies Encino left Wednesday and was gone overnight.

PBSO says Encino returned to the house after being told deputies were there. Encino told deputies she had been at another location with a man and that she had only had five beers.

She was arrested and charged with six counts of child neglect. The children were placed into DCF custody.
