Changes coming to your drivers license

WEST PALM BEACH, FL (WFLX) - Changes are coming to your driver license, and if you don't upgrade, it could keep you off commercial flights and out of federal buildings.

This month, the Palm Beach County Tax Collector sent fliers informing people under the age of 50 they have until December 1 to get a Real ID added to their driver's license.

It's a small star in the upper right hand corner of the license. It means you provided more paperwork, than in the past, proving your identity. "I mentioned to a few of my friends, 'Hey, have you done this, and they were like what are you talking about?' " explained Heather Griffin.

The Palm Beach County woman renewed her driver's license in April to include a Real ID star. "I appreciate the fact that they want to know a little bit more about people and have them prove who they are," Griffin said.

Palm Beach County Tax Collector Anne Gannon said it's all about security.

Officials will look for the Real ID star on your license before letting you into federal buildings starting in January.

And in 2016, you'll need the Real ID, or two forms of ID, to get on a commercial flight. "I'm pretty optimistic that eventually we'll get to the point where we need to be and I think it's a good thing for our country," Gannon said.

She expects lines at tax collector locations to be busy over the next few weeks, but said they move fastest on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

You cannot get this new license online, you have to do it in person.

If you're over 50, you have until 2017 to upgrade your license.
