Port St. Lucie car burglary suspect surrenders

Michael Mayberry of Port St Lucie Michael Mayberry of Port St Lucie

PORT ST. LUCIE, FL (WFLX) - Eighteen-year-old Michael Mayberry of Port St. Lucie was arrested by Port St. Lucie police on Monday, charged with two counts of burglary of a conveyance, loitering or prowling, and possession of a controlled substance without a prescription.

Police responded to investigate a possible fight call on the 3500 block of SW Rasardo Street. Once on scene, officers say, they spoke to Mayberry who told them that he was in the area to bring a college book to a friend. When this story didn't check out, Mayberry changed his story and said he was in the area to buy $20 of marijuana, according to police.

Officers continued their investigation and located a witness who gave a different account.

The witness said he was sitting in his parked car across the street from his house when he saw Mayberry pull up in a black Honda and exit his car.

The witness claims that Mayberry walked up the driveway of the witness's house and began looking in the cars parked in the driveway.

Mayberry then walked over to the witness's car and tried to open the door of the car he was sitting in.

The witness says he then turned on his car lights which caused Mayberry to get back into his car and flee the scene.

Police say the witness claims he then followed Mayberry in his car until Mayberry finally stopped on Rasardo Street. The witness then approached Mayberry and asked to see his identification, which Mayberry gave him.

Police then continued their investigation, and with the help of Officer Mitch Miller's K-9 partner Drago, located four bottles of cologne and a gray Bank of America bag, which contained Mayberry's wallet and a credit card belonging to a car burglary victim on SW Squirrel Avenue.

Police contacted the credit card owner who confirmed that she was missing the cologne and credit card from her two cars parked in her driveway.

Police say Mayberry ultimately admitted to the car burglary and was placed under arrest.
