Correcting credit score reports

(WFLX) - Your credit score is a critical number, and as you head into the new year, you may want to keep an eye on it. A recent consumer report found major mistakes on a large number of credit reports, and many people never realized it.

As you did your holiday shopping, how many times did you swipe your card over the past month? With all the recent credit card breaches being reported, you want to keep an eye on your credit report as you head into the new year.

A recent consumer report survey of 3,000 people found 20 percent found mistakes that could lower their credit score. This lower score could be the reason you get denied for that apartment or affect your interest rate on a loan.

Here is what you can do if you find a mistake:

1. Contact credit bureau in writing and not over the phone or on the Web site.

2. Notarize your letter

3. Send a copy of the letter to the company that made the mistake -- whether it be a store or a collections agency.

4. Credit companies will often reject complaints claiming they need more information, so include your social security number, driver's license, proof of address and any additional documentation you may have to get your complaint taken care of quickly.
