Arrest made in CityPlace shooting, Victim identified

WEST PALM BEACH, FL (WFLX) - West Palm Beach police have identified the person shot Saturday night at CityPlace.

UPDATE, MON 3:15 PM: Eighteen-year-old Demetric Davis of West Palm Beach was hit in the 500 block of Rosemary Avenue, according to investigators. His injuries were not life threatening. Police say he was treated and released from St. Mary's Medical Center the same night.

Police detained two juveniles from Riviera Beach on Saturday.

They arrested one on unrelated charges of violation of probation and violation of curfew.

Police say the juvenile gave a statement about his involvement in the shooting, and he was then charged with possession of a firearm by a juvenile delinquent and taken to the Juvenile Assessment Center.

Police also say they found the weapon that they suspect was used in the shooting.

Investigators say they suspect the victim was targeted.

Police say the case remains active and they urge anyone with information to contact Det. Rob McGinley at 561-822-1689 or Palm Beach County Crime Stoppers at 1.800.458.TIPS.

Previously: A teenager continues to recover after being shot Saturday night at CityPlace in West Palm Beach, according to police. Meanwhile, police continue to look for the shooter.

Police are hopeful that there are many witnesses who could come forward with information.

Sunday night, shoppers and diners returned to CityPlace, not letting the violent act spoil their plans for a night out.

Rebecca Mackler, on vacation from New Jersey, brought her family to CityPlace Sunday night. “I've been here for a week, and I'm here for one other week,” she said.

Half-way into her vacation, she says, her plans to bring her family to CityPlace almost took a backseat. “The second I heard it I was like, 'Oh. Maybe this isn't a good time to come.'”

Police said an 18-year-old man was shot in the back along Rosemary Avenue in City Place around 9 p.m. Saturday.

The shooting terrified many who were walking and eating nearby, including Beverly Taylor who was eating at Brio nearby. “I was so scared for my daughter and her baby. It was something that I've never experienced in my life,” Taylor said. “Everyone was screaming. The police started running towards us telling everyone to get down, get under the table,” said Taylor.

On Sunday, Mackler said the shooting wasn't the topic of conversation and many guests seemed unphased by the shooting. “I haven't heard one thing about it,” Mackler said.

Mackler still made her way to check CityPlace off of her vacation to-do list. “It's a beautiful place to be and it could happen anywhere. It happens in the nicest neighborhoods. It happens in the worst neighborhoods,” said Mackler.

A CityPlace spokesperson says on-site security responded quickly to the shooting to protect the area and visitors.

CityPlace is working closely with police to assist with the investigation.

Police have not yet identified the victim.
