PALM BEACH COUNTY, FL (WFLX) - Palm Beach County School District Superintendent Wayne Gent has announced he is stepping down from his position when his contract ends.
He said he will not seek an extension at the end of the year and will seek other opportunities in education. "I'm not retiring at all. It's was a joke that there was a retirement. My contract is up for renewal, and this is something I decided to not bring it forward and ask for renewal and to pursue other opportunities. So, there's no retirement. I want to continue to work, I'm a young guy I think and I have a lot of years ahead of me," Gent said.
Gent's last day as superintendent could be July 1st.He has been a part of the Palm Beach County School District for 15 years, three of them as a superintendent. Gent says it's time to do other things School board members just found out about Gent's decision Wednesday morning. They will meet in the next week or so to decide how to proceed in finding his replacement.
