Florida lawmaker files paperwork to ban kratom

By Katie LaGrone

(WFLX) - You can buy it in leaf form, powder, or pills. Now, one Florida lawmaker has filed the paperwork to get kratom off the shelves for good.

The substance, touted by some for its calming effects has been blasted by others for being addictive and dangerous.

Representative Kristin Jacobs (D- Coconut Creek) recently filed a bill to make kratom a schedule 1 controlled substance, which means it would be illegal to buy and sell in the sunshine state.

Last summer the herb made headlines in Palm Beach County when 20-year-old Ian Mautner committed suicide. His mother blamed kratom for his death. Her cries got the ears of Palm Beach County Commissioners who recently discussed the issue and decided to move forward with measures that would warn people of its possible side effects through signs and education.

County staff is still reviewing options and will eventually present their plan to commissioners.

If kratom is banned in Florida, Palm Beach County Commissioner Priscilla Taylor, who is leading the charge on regulating the substance in the county, still supports a countywide kratom education program.
