LOXAHATCHEE GROVES, FL (WFLX) - A septic tank truck crashed into a canal in Loxahatchee Groves on Monday, causing diesel to leak into the water.
The crash occurred at 11:45 a.m. near the intersection of Okeechobee Boulevard and B Road.
Witnesses said the wreck was caused when a car attempted to make a left turn in front of the truck, forcing the truck driver to swerve, and miss the vehicle. However, this caused the truck to plummet into the nearby waterway.
The Loxahatchee Groves Water Control District said none of the contents inside the tank leaked out, but some diesel fuel did get into the water.
At 1 p.m., officials were putting down absorbents, called diapers, into the canal to soak up the fuel.
The canal runs to the C-52 canal, which eventually flows to the ocean. The canal is not connected to any wells that residents use.
Officials at the scene said the diapers will need to stay in place at the canal for four to five days to absorb all of the oil and fuel.
The driver of the truck was not seriously injured, but he was taken to the hospital to be checked out.
