Florida School For Boys At Okeechobee: Victims recall beatings; cadaver dogs look for buried bodies

OKEECHOBEE, FL (WFLX) - Cadaver dogs from around the state were on their way to Okeechobee Monday where they will start their search Tuesday for buried bodies on the Old Florida School for Boys campus. The students attended the state reform school in the 1960s.

Many say they were beaten to the point of serious injury and had friends disappear.

A sister school in Mariana, Florida was the site of a major investigation that turned up close to 50 bodies. "I hope they find something, and it is all finished. But if they don't I hope the investigation doesn't end there," former student Michael Sapp said.

Survivors from the Okeechobee campus were arriving in Okeechobee from as far away as South Carolina Monday. "We have been waiting for this day," former Florida School for Boys student Gary Rice said.

Some of the survivors are skeptical cadaver dogs will be able to find buried bones from nearly 50 years ago.

But they call this "a step in the right direction".

They're hoping investigators will also use ground-penetrating radar on the massive property.

They say that is what was used when the bodies in Mariana were found.

The search starts on Tuesday at 8 a.m. At least five cadaver dog teams, including one from the Palm Beach Sheriff's Office, will take part.

The Okeechobee County Sheriff's Office is not commenting on the investigation or the search.

It is expected to last until Thursday.
