Vero Beach child gets 'Blue Man Group' arm created with the help of a 3D printer

At just a week old, Wyatt Falardeau had to have his forearm and hand amputated. As he got older, the Vero Beach family tried a number of prosthetics.

“By the time he was 2 and a half, his greatest joy was pulling it off in the grocery store to see what people would think," said mom Cynthia Falardeau.

Recently, Cynthia Falardeau heard about the work being done at the University of Central Florida. A student led non-profit called “Limbitless Solutions” was hard at work making electronic arms from 3-D printers.

“We have the best payoff in the world seeing a smile on a little child like that," said John Sparkman with Limbitless Solutions.

The hand opens and closes when Wyatt flexes his bicep. He's the third child to get a new robotic arm, and Monday, he got to meet Alex Pring, another Florida boy who was the first. Alex told Wyatt to work hard to master his new arm.

Wyatt is on the autism spectrum and loves science and theater. In fact, the arm is decked out in the colors of his favorite performers, the Blue Man Group.

A video shows the group surprising him with the new limb. They also turned up Monday to congratulate him in person.

So what's next for Wyatt?

He has the same dreams of many a 12-year-old boy.

“I want to dance with a girl," says Wyatt.

And his parents say this has inspired him not just to dream, but to have hope.

“This is real, it's not a cartoon, this is real," adds Wyatt.

The electronic arms come with about a $350 and UCF has had requests from 40 nations for new limbs.

Monday, UCF announced it is creating a new center called CABAM, the Center for Applied Biomedical Additive Manufacturing.

It's partnering with Limbitless Solutions to become a worldwide resourced for 3-D printed solutions.
