Palm Beach County teachers upset over pay raise proposal

PALM BEACH COUNTY, FL (WFLX) - Some teachers in Palm Beach County got a big surprise Thursday when they learned that their salaries would not be increasing as they had hoped.

Superintendent Wayne Gent sent out a letter telling Palm Beach County School District Employees that their proposed raise will be less than half this year.

Many frustrated teachers have already taken to social media voicing their concerns.

For the past two years teachers' salaries increased 8 percent over a two-year period for full-time employees.

That would now drop to only 2 percent, a major difference for the teachers expecting to have that extra money.

Gent's letter starts by saying this year had significant challenges to the budget from the onset. He says the money that would have been spent on the salary increases was affected by charter school growth and after school services that were mandated by the state.

The superintendent says he hopes to give teachers the 2 percent increase as soon as possible.

This is one of the last decisions we will probably see from Gent. The district's new superintendent Robert Avossa takes over on June 11.
