ORT PIERCE, Fla. - A St. Lucie County Detention Deputy lost his life in a single-car crash on his way to work Thursday evening, according to Sheriff Ken Mascara.

Officials say St. Lucie County Sheriff's Detention Deputy Alan Ross, 50, of Port St. Lucie was on his way to work when he crashed a Nissan Frontier at 6:24 p.m. in the northbound lane of Interstate 95.

The crash location is one mile north of State Road 70 (Okeechobee Road) and one mile south of State Road 68 (Orange Avenue) in St. Lucie County.

Ross was pronounced dead at the scene.  A Florida Highway Patrol report said he was not wearing a seat belt.

Deputy Ross spent 20 years with the Florida Department of Corrections and two years with the St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office.

Joyce Ross, the deputy's wife, works at the St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office Warrants Unit.

"We ask that you keep the surviving family members and former colleagues of Deputy Ross in your hearts and prayers," Sheriff Mascara said in a news release. "Deputy Ross was an exemplary officer who earned two Unit Citations from the Sheriff's Office and glowing personnel evaluations from his supervisors."
